What is different about this work in New York
Brooklyn and Buffalo are not one market
They are roughly 370 miles apart and share nothing but a state line. Kings County alone has about 2,653,963 residents — more than Buffalo and the whole of Erie County combined. Nothing we do for one has any bearing on the other, and we do not pretend it does.
The language figure drives both accounts
In Kings County, 44.6% of residents aged five and over speak a language other than English at home — double the national rate of 22.3%. In Buffalo it is 19.2%, below the national rate and well under New York State’s 30.9%.
Those are opposite problems. An Urdu-language platform in Brooklyn is speaking the language a large share of the borough already uses at home. A Pakistani restaurant in Buffalo is largely introducing a cuisine to an English-speaking local market — so the content has to explain and invite rather than assume familiarity.
